An exchange of share certificates (Swedish: utbyte av aktiebrev) means a company withdraws old share certificates and issues new ones. This may be needed when the details are no longer correct, for example after a share split, a reverse share split or a reclassification, or when the format needs updating.
The old certificates should be voided so there are not several valid documents for the same shares. The share ledger must show whether certificates have been issued, so the exchange should be documented there too.

A share certificate is written proof that a person owns certain shares in a limited company.
