A primary market (Swedish: primärmarknad or förstahandsmarknad) is the market where new securities are issued and sold for the first time. Investors buy directly from the issuer, for example in a new share issue, and the money goes to the company. In the secondary market, existing securities trade between investors.
Raising capital in the primary market creates new shares, changing the number of shares and owners' stakes. The new shares and their owners must be entered in the share ledger.

A secondary market is the market where securities already issued are bought and sold between investors.
